Dr. Anthony (Tony) Clarke Mb, ChB (Cape Town), MRCP, FRACP, FRCP, BBus was one of the first doctors to work with Finlay Macrae when the training programs were delivered in Fiji from 2008. When ANZGITA was being established as a registered charity and company in 2014, Tony worked closely with Finlay and took on the roles of Deputy Chair and Programs Coordinator. In the latter role, he was responsible for the planning and delivery of in-country training programs as well as being a trainer himself. In 2022 Tony retired from the Board.
In our 2022 Annual Report our Chair, Finlay Macrae, wrote "Of special note is my enormous gratitude to Tony Clarke who is retiring. Tony’s contribution to the success of ANZGITA could easily be judged as the most significant to date." His work covered policies, organisation structure, position statements, codes of conduct, trainer accrediatation processes, temporary registration processes, ... and the list goes on.
Tony was a medical practitioner for 40 years and a gastroenterologist for 30 of them, having practised in South Africa, UK, New Zealand and Australia. As a young doctor in Soth Africa, where he completed his medical training at the Groote Schuur Hospital, he witnessed the world's first heart transplant.
He arrived in Canberra in 1978 to work with the only other gastroenterologist. He worked at the Canberra Hospital until he retired in 2011 having been Director of the Gastroenterology Unit, Clinical Director, Medicine and a member of Canberra Hospital Executive. He has also been a GESA Board member and a clinical associate professor at the Australian National University Medical School. He first conducted training at the WGO Training Centre in Suva in 2008.
