Dr Chris Kiely

Picture
Chris Kiely is Program Leader for ANZGITA’s Timor-Leste training programs run in partnership with the national hospital, Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares (HNGV). For two years (2016 to 2018) Dr Kiely was based in Dili, Timor-Leste.  While there he re-established Timor-Leste’s only endoscopy unit at HNGV. Following an agreed MoU with HNGV, ANZGITA ran the first training program in 2017. Chris is in regular contact with the unit and provides it with support as required.
With Dr Kiely and ANZGITA’s support, Timor-Leste now has:
  • a fully functional diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy unit
  • Timorese doctors and nurses trained in endoscopy
  • an after-hours emergency endoscopy service for gastrointestinal bleeding
  • a semi-automatic endoscope reprocessing and storage system and sterilisation equipment able to be supported locally
  • standards and protocols in place for safe and effective endoscopy treatment
  • a clinic for antiviral treatment for patients with hepatitis B
Dr Kiely is an active researcher in the field of gastroenterology.  He has presented at national and international medical conferences.  He gained his PhD which focussed on IBD from Australian National University in 2021.  Dr Kiely has published multiple articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed medical journals on subjects such as:
  • the microbiome in inflammatory bowel disease
  • pregnancy in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
  • novel treatments for autoimmune hepatitis
  • hepatitis B virus treatment
  • acetarsol for the treatment of refractory proctitis
  • the safety of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tubes (PEG tubes)
  • bowel cancer diagnosis
  • Clostridium difficile infection
  • immunotherapy-related colitis
Dr Kiely studied medicine at Sydney University and graduated in 2008 (BMedSc MBBS).  Subsequently he undertook specialist training in gastroenterology at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, gaining Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2014.  During this time he developed a special interest in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).  This was further refined over two years, while working at Canberra Hospital and in the United Kingdom, where he was the senior clinical fellow in IBD at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
