Nepal Training Program - $10,000 needed annually

Picture

The Need - Liver cirrhosis (alcohol, and hepatitis B and C) and gastric cancer (Helicobacter pylori) death rates in Nepal are very high. Colorectal cancer rates, particularly in young people, appear to be increasing. These diseases and others can only be treated successfully when doctors have the necessary skills in gastroenterology using technologies such as endoscopy.

Although elite facilities are available to the wealthy, most Nepali surgeons and physicians have little access to endoscopic training, and the facilities and equipment available to them are distressingly poor. The role of nurses, the standard bearers responsible for a safe working environment, is grossly undervalued. Physicians forced to travel abroad for specialist education too often choose to settle overseas. Those who are committed to Nepal are desperate for opportunities to improve their skills, enhance their careers and offer more and better services to the broader community.

How ANZGITA Helps - We are employing our successful approach to clinician development delivering multi-year intensive one to two-week training programs in Kathmandu to doctors and nurses from across Nepal who have an interest in gastroenterology.  There is an emphasis on safe diagnostic endoscopy along with a selection of broader topics, some delivered as presentations to a larger clinical audience to raise general awareness of diseases and appropriate treatments.

Your Support will help underwrite the sustained delivery of annual programs through funding trainers’ (particularly nurses) travel and accommodation costs. This capacity building work will play a significant role in building a community of committed and skilled clinicians who will treat people in need.

We can also be called upon to provide endoscopic accessories and other materials to support training and on-going procedures between programs. The generosity of industry suppliers and monetary donors assists here. If funds are available we also assist in funding facility upgrades, e.g. reprocessing facilities.

If the donations can be secured, our plan is to offer scholarships for clinicians to attend our training program or other suitable short duration training in Nepal or beyond. As we have done in other countries, we will look for placements in an Australian unit for advanced trainees for periods of up to 3 months.

We hold our training programs at Nepal Medical College (NMC) Teaching Hospital, our partner, which has undergraduate medical and nursing degree courses. Trainers normally consist of 3 doctors and 3 nurses working with up to 10 physician trainees and a similar number of nurses. We provide advice to NMC on facilities and equipment and management of their facilities and services.

It is the NMC’s plan to offer a Master’s Degree which we will help design and deliver.  We will look to supplement this support by including the NMC in our tele-learning webinar program which features regular expert presentations and Q & A seminars on specific topics.

What it means for Nepal - As has occurred elsewhere, we anticipate a gradual development of skills and practices over time. Giving doctors more skills and career advancement in-country will help retain them as providers of treatments, such as endoscopy services, for digestive and other diseases that are not available to their patients today. Nurses will support doctors in providing safe practices and effective care. Overall, the work of these clinicians will improve the quality of life for the Nepalese population.

How Your Support Will Help - Your support will help underwrite the certainty and sustained delivery of annual programs by funding trainers’ (particularly nurses) costs. The Nepali trainee clinicians involved have heavily loaded schedules so can only spare a short amount of dedicated time each year towards furthering their skills with our experts, and it is important we are reliable in regularly returning to assist them.  It will also help us assist NMC as it builds the quality and credibility of its post graduate courses, to encourage more to enrol and take an even bigger step in their career development.

Sponsor Benefits - For Individuals. For Companies. For Foundations. The primary benefit to you as a sponsor will be acknowledgement in the gastroenterology community in Australia and New Zealand of your support for our humanitarian work, possibly as part of your approach to social responsibility which shares our focus of building healthcare capacity in the developing countries of Indo-Pacific region.
We will promote awareness of your sponsorship through our publications, industry events and at our on-site international programs. Your organisation will be highlighted on the ANZGITA website, every newsletter and our Annual Report.  We will note your sponsorship to other prospective sponsors and donors.

Supporting ANZGITA's volunteer community of gastroenterology professionals in their training and aid of colleagues in developing IndoPacific countries shows your commitment to advancing the healthcare and quality of life for the people of those countries.

We invite you to invest in developing self-sustaining IndoPacific communities of committed and skilled doctors and nurses who will treat people in need.

Funding ANZGITA's work

Funding is received from multiple sources; the gastroenterology community, philanthropy, individuals and government, and in multiple forms - financial and in-kind, one-off donation or a lump sum spread over multiple years. To continue we require strong on-going relationships with a number of funding organisations and individuals for:
  • the delivery of existing training programs including support for travel, accommodation and other out-of-pocket expenses that can be a disincentive for prospective trainers who are keen to volunteer their time
  • the expansion of programs both in terms of the services provided and countries where we work
  • equipment and materials acquisition and maintenance
  • specialised high level training out-of-country
  • administration of the association.
We invite you to invest in the future of gastroenterology practice in AsiaPacific, to help build self-sustaining communities of committed and skilled medical practitioners who employ best practice to treat people in need. Exercise your social responsibility by supporting the highly reputed ANZGITA Training Programs and the medical centres with which we partner.
